Your Mental Health Pre and Post-Pregnancy

The focus of antenatal classes is often upon the health and well-being of both mum and baby. It is incredibly important to take good care of yourself in terms of eating well, resting and gentle exercise, both before and after you have your baby. But what about your mental health? Mental health and well-being are very important aspects of your overall general health during pregnancy and after you have your baby. As the saying goes, a happy mum equals a happy baby. Women who suffer with mental health problems may find pregnancy and the postnatal period a huge challenge but mental health problems are also common in women who have never experienced them before.

During your pregnancy

Your mental health and well-being are just as important during your pregnancy as your physical health. Our antenatal classes discuss the normal hormonal changes during pregnancy, and the differing emotions you may feel as your pregnancy progresses. Feelings of anxiety, nervousness and inadequacy may all be felt. Pregnancy is an extremely vulnerable time for women, and many can feel that they are not in control of their own body. Our classes aim to empower women, create a safe space for women (and men) to discuss their worries and concerns, as well as offer an opportunity to form (hopefully) long-lasting friendships with fellow mums and dads to be.

Post birth

We help mums and dads to be learn about mental health issues and well-being post-birth. We discuss those all-important first few days post-partum when women experience what is known as the 'baby blues'. We also discuss postnatal depression and the signs that you need to look out for.  Most importantly, we explain what help is available to you after you have your baby, in terms of looking after your mental health.

Antenatal classes are very important for expectant mums. At Bump to Cradle, we offer a safe, informed and non-judgemental environment where future parents can learn about all aspects of pregnancy, antenatal and postnatal care, including looking after your mental health.
